The quietest spot we found was the offshoot hike to Private Arch. We talked to a few people who did the additional hike to Dark Angel and they said it wasn’t worth it. This was our view of Dark Angel from Double O Arch. It has collapsed, but you can see the remains.Ĭan you see the dark spot in the middle right of the photo? It was inspiring to see that age doesn’t have to stop you from adventuring. The weather was mild when we went, and we saw plenty of retired folks on the trail who completed the entire loop. The hike itself isn’t very difficult, but I imagine when you factor in the heat of the summer, it can be brutal. At first, we were worried that we might get lost like we tend to do on hikes, but there was always a steady stream of people on the hike that we didn’t have to worry about it. The first part of the hike is well marked and easy, but most of the hike consists of primitive trails with narrow portions of slick rock and drop offs. You also don’t need one if you are doing a tour with an approved company.ĭistance: 7.8-mile loop, with more optional offshootsĭifficulty: Moderate to Strenuous (especially in summer) If you have camping, backcountry, Fiery Furnace, or special use permits, they qualify as your ticket. It doesn’t cost extra but there is a $2 service fee. NOTE: Timed Entry Tickets are needed if you plan on visiting between April 3 to October 3, 2022. This hike, however, has a little bit of everything! It has diverse landscapes and takes you to 8 different arches directly on the trail and several offshoots to see more. We’ve done plenty of hikes where the journey is boring with an amazing view at the end or vice versa. However, I have assisted lost hikers (one group missed Double O Arch entirely), and people alarmed by short friction pitches. Most will think the loop is the definition of fun. For those unsure of their desert backcountry prowess, go to Double O Arch before committing to the Primitive Trail. The majority of people turn around at Landscape Arch. Route: The beauty of this stem and loop is that any portion may be undertaken separately or in combination. Navigation is easy IF cairns are carefully followed. Most of the route beyond Landscape is on sandstone and occasionally crosses the tops of low-lying fins. Maintained and manicured trail to Landscape Arch is barrier-free, suitable for wheelchairs. Roundtrip Time: 2:30 to 5:00, depending on extent of explorations Elevation gain is approximately 1,000 feet for the 8 mile option. Reservation, visit Distance and Elevation Gain: 1.8 miles roundtrip to Landscape Arch 4.2 miles roundtrip to Double O Arch 5.2 miles for the Primitive Trail stem and loop 8.0 miles for the aggregate of spur trails. During winter months, 24 sites are available on a first-come,įirst-served basis. You may, and should, make your reservation six months Sites may be reserved between March 1stĪnd October 31st. There are outhouses at the trailhead.Īccommodate up to ten people. Although the parking lot is generous, it does fill regularly so arrive early or visit in winter. However, there is year-round water in the campground. Devils Garden Trailhead is at the end of the park road at 17.4 miles. Is located steps from the parking lot on the north side of theīuilding.
